Step by Step Process to Connect Two Modems in One House

Without any complications, you can connect two models with the help of an ethernet cable that will connect both of them.

Step 1

To begin with the process, you have to select one modem that will act as the primary device. Make sure that you choose the modem that has the latest and advanced features.

Step 2

The next step is to choose the secondary modem that will help you extend the original internet connection. Choose the modem that can work properly when you connect the LAN to the WAN.

Step 3

During the configuration, you must keep both the modems close to each other and to your computer or any other device that you are using to configure the modems. Once you are through with the configuration, you can install them anywhere.

Step 4

Next most important step that will make sure the strength and the future functioning of the internet are to choose which connection you want.

You can either select a link from LAN to WAN or LAN to LAN connection. Both the connections work differently.

In LAN to WAN connection, you can have a broader range of networks along with a good sharing connection on your mobile phone computers and other devices. However, in LAN to LAN connection, you get a secondary network into the leading network that allows you to set restrictions as per your whim.

Step 5

After selecting the connection you want, you will have to connect your modem with the primary router. You can use the ethernet cable for connecting your computer and modem to the router.

Step 6

After that you will start with the configuration. In most cases, you can have access to the routers and modem with the help of the IP address. You can put the IP address in your web browser and start with the configuration process.

Step 7

The next step is to change the DHCP settings of your modem. Here also you have two options.

If you decide to choose LAN to WAN connection, then go to the router page and change the DHCP setting of your primary router.

In this setting, you will have to change the DHCP service to provide you with an address between 192.168.1.2 and 192.168.1.50.

On the other hand, if you have selected LAN to LAN connection, you don’t have to change DHCP settings. With this, you are done with the configuration of your primary modem.

Step 8

Now connect your secondary modem to your laptop and go to the settings on your computer. You have to follow the similar steps as you have done with the primary modem. First, you have to change the IP address that matches that of the primary modem.

Step 9

The next step is to change the DHCP settings on your secondary modem. If you are using LAN to LAN connection, then you don’t have to change anything. Just make sure that DHCP service is not enabled on the secondary modem.

But if you have a LAN to WAN connection, then configure the DHCP server and make sure that you get the address between 192.168.2.2 and 192.168.2.50 on the modem.

Step 10

If your modems are wireless, you will have to manually do the configuration so that you don’t phase signal interference in your models.

Step 11

After the configuration, you will have to connect the two modems with the help of the ethernet cable.

Make sure that the ethernet cable is put correctly into the pass-through slots of both modems.

You have to put one end of the ethernet cable on the LAN port and the other end in the port of the second modem for the connection. And now it’s done.
